Before Getting a Divorce, Compare Divorce Lawyers. Here’s How.

Getting a divorce is a tough decision to make. Once you do however, it is followed by only more tough decisions. Divorce is costly and exhausting, and you may be tempted to settle for the most convenient lawyers, or the cheapest one, or the one your friend knows, etc. This may seem like a good idea, but it is crucial that you do your homework and really see what your options are. Opting for the cheapest/closest/meanest one is not always the best choice for you and your situation, and shopping around can only work for your benefit.

Here are a few things to consider when hiring the lawyer that will be best for you. Remember, you are the customer here so you might as well shop around first.

Experience

How long has this person been in the industry? If he or she only has a year or two of experience, this is not necessarily a deal breaker. Similarly, twenty years of experience doesn’t always mean they are just what you are looking for. Everyone’s experience has been different, and it doesn’t hurt to find out more about their time in the industry and what they have accomplished. Always be sure this person is familiar with the divorce laws in your state, particularly if they have recently relocated to your area. Client testimonies are a great way to gauge a person’s experience, and many are available online. These are a very valuable component of a good lawyer. If others have had success with them, you know they are capable of this.

Communication skills

Are they easy to talk to? Do you understand their abilities and what they want to do for you? Do you feel comfortable sharing this much of your personal life with this person? These questions should all be taken into consideration. After all, you will be paying this person a lot of money as well as spending a decent amount of time with them. They should be easy to reach and have your best interest in mind. If it just doesn’t feel right, find someone else. They are here to work for you. If you don’t feel like you can approach them with your questions or that they are not being helpful to you, keep looking.

Fees

So you’ve found a great lawyer who seems to really know what you want and you are confident in their abilities to serve you, until you are surprised with a high unexpected consultation fee that was never mentioned to you or you are unwilling to pay. Although the fee itself should be expected, this person should be open and honest with you about all of these upfront costs. Refusing to pay it after you have been serviced already is disrespectful, and you should inquire about these before getting any help from a lawyer. For transparency’s sake, always obtain all of this information ahead of time and request invoices and receipts for your own records.
